Fucking epic as fuck
Princess Giulia was a member of the powerful Medici family who, beginning in the early years of the Renaissance, would rule Florence for almost four centuries. She was the daughter of Alessandro. Although the illegitimate son of a pope and an African slave woman, he was created Duke of Florence by the Emperor Charles V in 1530, thus becoming the first black head of state in modern Western history.
She might be of particular interest to President and Mrs. Obama, since Giulia’s portrait as a child is conveniently on display at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, just a few miles from the Capitol. In the symbolism on which her portrait in the Ufizzi as a young woman is based, can be detected a theological defense of her African ancestry - probably the first apologia of this kind on record.
The African ancestry of PRINCESS CHARLOTTE of Mecklenburg Strelitz, on the other hand, dated back to the 13th century. However, because of the highly inbred marital patterns of the German royal families from whom she primarily descends, her features showed a distinctly Negroid cast which the Abolitionist movement in the UK used to its advantage. She, of course, was the Queen consort of George III, the King who lost America.
Besides Charlotte, there is another woman of color in the genealogy the British Royal Family and a far more recent one at that, too. She is PRINCESS NATALIE the daughter of the the celebrated Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin who had, himself, deployed the story of his black great grand father as propaganda against slavery in the Americas. She married Prince Nicholas of Nassau in 1868. Despite the royal circles in which she, her children and grandchildren moved, they were relentlessly targeted by the racist American and international press for decades. However, when Natalie’s daughter, Sophie, and her husband, the Russian Grand Duke, Michael, moved to England in the early 1900s, it soon became unmistakably clear to the society columnists of the times that not withstanding her descent from “a coal black Negro,” as they insistently reminded their readers, she and Michael had become the closest friends of King George V and his wife, Queen Mary. With the wedding of Sophie’s daughter, Nadja, to Prince George of Battenberg, Queen Victoria’s great grand son, Natalie’s line was united with that of the British Royal Family. Because of what these African connections can offer to substantiate Queen Elizabeth’s position today as head and “mother” of the British Commonwealth of Nations, they are a crucially important and very cherished part of Her Majesty’s heritage.
Her poetry is everything.
